When you are looking for disability support services in Ohio, DODD certification is one of the first things you will hear about. And it matters — but it is not the whole story.
The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities certifies providers who meet the state’s standards for delivering waiver-funded services. That certification tells you an agency has cleared a baseline. What it does not tell you is whether that agency is actually a good fit for your family member.
Here is what to look for beyond the certificate.
First, Confirm the Certification Is Current
This sounds obvious, but it is worth checking. An agency should be able to tell you clearly that they are DODD certified and which services they are approved to deliver. If that information is hard to get or vague, that alone is a red flag.
At Steps 2 Better Living, we are a DODD certified provider serving adults across Hamilton County. We are happy to confirm that directly and answer any questions about what it means for the people we support.
Questions Worth Asking Any DODD Provider
How long have you been operating?
Newer agencies are not automatically a problem, but experience matters. An agency that has been working within the Ohio waiver system for a while understands how to navigate it on your behalf.
What services are you certified to provide?
DODD certification covers specific service types. Make sure the agency is approved for the exact services your family member needs — not just a general certification.
How do you handle complaints or concerns?
Every good agency has a clear process for this. If the answer is vague or dismissive, pay attention to that.
What does your staff training look like?
Certification covers the agency, not individual workers. Ask about how support staff are trained, supervised, and held accountable day to day.
How involved will my family member be in their own care plan?
Ohio’s waiver system is built around self-determination. A provider that genuinely practices person-centered care will have a clear answer to this — and it will not sound like a rehearsed line.
What Certification Cannot Tell You
A DODD certificate confirms an agency meets state requirements. It does not tell you whether staff actually show up consistently, whether the agency communicates well with families, or whether the people they support feel genuinely heard.
Those things only come out through conversation — with the agency directly, and ideally with families who have worked with them.
Brady, one of the people we support, was referred to us by a friend who was already receiving services here. He told us it was the best decision he made — not because of our credentials, but because of how we treated him from day one. That kind of feedback means more to us than any certification.
